ChatGPT can generate leads for your business, but only as a byproduct of authority it can verify.
How ChatGPT Recommends Businesses
ChatGPT’s search mode does not pull from a secret database. It draws heavily on Bing’s live web index, which reads the same signals Google reads: your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings, and third-party mentions. The model then synthesizes an answer from the businesses it can find, understand, and corroborate.
SearchLight tracked 2,337 AI-referred leads across 707 home-services contractors in Q1 2026. Those leads produced 784 booked appointments, 356 paying customers, and $1.04 million in closed revenue (The Data Driven Trades). ChatGPT drove the largest share. The leads are real, but they go to businesses already visible enough to be summarized.
The Three Signals That Matter
- Crawlable, explicit website. Make sure OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and PerplexityBot can read your pages. Clear service descriptions, real service-area content, and clean structured data all help.
- Recent, detailed reviews. Reviews are social proof the model can quote. A review that describes a specific outcome is stronger than a five-star rating with no text.
- Consistent citations. Your name, address, phone, and services should match across your site, GBP, Houzz, Yelp, Angi, and any trade directories.
Common Blocks That Hide You
Most cabinet and remodeling businesses we review fail the technical check not because they tried to block AI, but because their robots.txt was copied from an old template. A blanket disallow can hide your entire site from the very bots you want to appear in. The fix is usually simple: allow those user-agents access to your public pages.
The Tracking Problem
Even when ChatGPT sends you a lead, your CRM may credit it to “direct traffic” or Google Business Profile. SearchLight found only 1.5% of AI-referred leads were correctly attributed in contractor CRMs, while 69.8% had no attribution at all (The Data Driven Trades). Add UTM-tagged links, dedicated numbers, and ask leads how they heard about you.
The Work Is Not Magic
AI visibility is a narrower version of the SEO and reputation work most shops already need to do. There is no secret prompt or hack. The businesses that appear are the ones the index trusts.
If you want the technical system built for your business, our AI visibility tool audits exactly these signals. For the full playbook, read how to get recommended by ChatGPT as a cabinet business.
This is not for a business that needs leads this week. AI visibility compounds over months; paid search is the right lever for immediate demand.
